Established in 2017, the Y’s New American Welcome Center (NAWC) works to co-create a community where all immigrants can thrive and flourish by engaging local institutions and mobilizing community resources to ensure equitable access to services, economic opportunity, and meaningful belonging.
Job Description
This internship will focus on client interaction, case management, as well as physical and electronic file organization for the NAWC Immigrant Helpline. As a free, confidential resource for the community, the Immigrant Family Services Helpline provides services that include provider referrals, translation/interpretation, and ongoing support through advocacy, application preparation, and case management. The intern will report to and work closely with the NAWC Immigrant Family Services Manager.
Compensation
This internship is a volunteer position and not a job. The intern must commit to volunteering a minimum of 10 hours per week. A stipend may be available.
Requirements
Flexible during business hours (Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm); some weekends and evenings. Volunteer schedule will be arranged in coordination with the intern’s supervisor.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
Client Interaction & Resource Navigation. Interact with and complete intake forms for helpline clients over the phone (or in-person during office hours and outreach events). Return missed calls, complete applications for assistance such as public benefits, ensure timely follow-up on cases by identifying appropriate referral information and services, and communicate with clients and referral agencies.
Data Entry & Reporting. Ensure intake information/client files are up-to-date and well-organized, with detailed notes on calls and client interactions. Prepare participant information and keep records as appropriate, ensuring that systems are maintained for tracking and recording progress and outcomes.
Essential Knowledge & Skills
- Attention to detail and skills in organization and data management;
- Ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels;
- Passionate about working for immigrants’ rights and social justice;
- Effective time management and ability to work under deadlines;
- Ability to work independently and as a team member;
- Basic computer skills;
- Experience in capturing data in programs like Salesforce;
- Fluency in English and Spanish or French; must be able to read, write, and speak in target language with high proficiency.
